A sign is the only thing on the street that was there for all of it and had no part in any of it. It hung while the business was built, while the war came through, while the owner sold or closed or died, and it was still hanging when the last person stopped looking up at it.
The people are harder to find than the brands. A chemist whose name was taken off a list so she could keep working, and whose name we still don't have. An enameller in Milan who signed a smiling boy "Baby" and left no other trace. A pilot who wrote "Bad show" in his logbook the day he lost both legs, and was flying combat nine years later.
Their stories are rarely tidy. People made decisions under pressure, and not all of it resolves. The sign hung through it all.
What connects them all? They survived.
And now their stories continue.
